A peaceful "benefit" for Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church.

We get a lot of questions repeated over and over again. And we thought, “If only there were some common way on the Internet to answer these frequently asked questions…” And then we quit being dumb.

Without further ado, here’s the FAQ (soon to be it’s own page):

  1. Why the “F” word?
The first reason is because it seems to be the Phelps family’s favorite word, and so we’re going to use it here in a ironic/mocking tone toward them. In other words, “Those people you hate? Here they are. Not to mention a bunch of their friends.”The second use is as an attention-getter. Use of a controversial word grabs the eye. No, we’re not trying to reclaim the word for homosexuals. As I’ve mentioned in several places around the web, and in the Sirius OutQ radio interview, I’m straight, and so I couldn’t do that even if I wanted to. And yes, I’m sure more and more people will hate me for using the word, but most seem okay with it in this context (and I wouldn’t/haven’t used it in any other context). It is NOT being used in a hateful way.
  2. Don’t you think people will avoid the march because of the word? Don’t you think the media will ignore you because of it?
Maybe, and that’s ok. If it makes you uncomfortable, don’t come. No hard feelings. As for the media, some may be turned away by it. But, they don’t HAVE to use the name, and I think any reporter knows that.
  3. One Million People? Really?
No. Not really. Again, in all honesty, it’s an attention-getter. The population of Topeka is about 125,000. Logistically, 1,000,000 people just won’t fit. The number is just hyperbole. All we mean is we want A LOT of people there. That includes you.
  4. Do you have the proper permits?
As of Feb 20th, no, not yet. Topeka doesn’t actually require a permit for picketing. You just have to follow the laws regarding picketing. Here’s the relevant part from the Topeka code book:“It is unlawful for any person to engage in focused picketing, during the time period from one-half hour prior to the beginning time of an announced religious event until one-half hour after the ending time of the event, on public property at any of the following locations: (1) On the sidewalk adjoining the property on which a house of worship is situated; or
    (2) In the street or roadway adjoining or adjacent to the property on which a house of worship is situated; or
    (3) On the public area between the house of worship and an adjoining or adjacent street or roadway, including but not limited to the curb, drainage, or area between the street and sidewalk (if a sidewalk exists) commonly referred to as the “parking” or “easement”; or
    (4) On any public property within 50 feet of the property line on which a house of worship is situated, if any entrance to the house of worship is located on that side of the property.”

These laws were put in place to protect other churches from the WBC, but in this case it works their favor. The details are still being worked out, but we may need to gather in a nearby park during this time.HOWEVER, we may need a special event permit. I’m still talking with the Topeka government to see what makes something a “special event” as opposed to just “picketing.”

  5. How can I help?
Spread the word, mostly. Submit the press release to your local media outlets (TV, radio, newspapers, blogs, etc.). Put up the flyer found in the blog. Also, if you’d like bathrooms without having to walk awhile, we’re going to need monetary donations. (The city may also require this… trying to get final word on that, too.) Know anyone who owns a mobile concession stand? That could be handy (if we don’t want to have a large group of people storming the McD’s down the street. Our last concession “source” has backed out.
  6. Who is Sans Phelps?
Sans Phelps is a fake name for a made-up person. Originally we had several people using the name. Now it’s basically just me, Chris.

“Sans” means without. So the joke is we’re having an event “Without Phelps”
